Surfing the Net with Kids: Children’s Book Awards
"My daughter is getting to that age where everyone else is more of an expert than dear old Mom and Dad. And books I was recommending were being summarily turned down. ""Mom, that book is as OLD as I am!"" But when this year’s Newbery Medal winners were announced, she was reading (and enjoying) one of the books honored as a runner-up. So, she choose another book from this year’s picks, and liked that one too. Thank goodness for experts with good taste in new books!"

Surfing the Net with Kids: Banned Books Week
"Banned Books Week is September 23 - September 30, 2000. Subtitled "Celebrating the Freedom to Read," its message is not only the freedom to choose, but also the importance of ensuring the availability of all viewpoints. I chose the books below from a list of frequently challenged books. What’s the difference between a challenge and a ban? According to the American Library Association, "A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials." Because of the efforts of librarians, teachers and many other concerned citizens, most challenges do not succeed. As always, my star ratings apply to the Web sites, not the books they feature."
