Stories of the Century
"The Newseum ("The Interactive Museum of News") asked journalists and historians nationwide to select the top hundred news events of the twentieth century: this is their list. What event out ranked all others? "1945: United States drops atomic bombs on Hiroshima, Nagasaki. Japan surrenders to end World War II." Which events do you think were the most pivotal? Cast your vote online and compare your event ranking to those of other readers. Readers so far have voted the 1969 moon walk as the number one event of the century."

Solemates: The Century in Shoes
""The magic of Dorothy’s ruby slippers . . . the hip-swinging appeal of Elvis’ blue suede shoes . . . the unadulterated excess of Imelda’s footwear collection. It’s amazing how shoes, an item of such practical purpose, have come to reflect the changing passions, perspectives and ideals of our culture. ... We invite you to do some sole searching with us in our decade-by-decade look at the Century in Shoes." No, I’m not making this up. Complete with videos and shoe advertisements this is marvelous fun!"

Smithsonian: Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga
"1000 years ago Norseman, the first Europeans to set foot in the New World, landed in Newfoundland, Canada. "The Vikings did not stay long in North America, but the story of their arrival and contacts with the Native Americans is a remarkable tale, or in Nordic terms, a saga." The Smithsonian online exhibit is interesting, but the Viking Voyage, a narrated multimedia sail across "the stormy seas of the North Atlantic in your own longship," is amazing. Don’t miss it."

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
"This is the official movie site for the swashbuckling Disney summer blockbuster. Visit to view movie clips, snag some graphics for your website, download a screensaver, feast upon stills from the film, or to play games. Yes, I chose the games, too. There are two: Rouge’s Battleship (a fun sea battle ) and Warrrrr (a pretty dull card game.) My favorite clicks are the behind-the-scenes tidbits offered in The Movie/The Production."

Pirates! Fact & Legend
"Krzysztof Wilczynski, who started his pirate site in 1996, traces piracy to ancient Greece because it was mentioned in Homer’s "Illiad and Odyssey." More pirate history and pirate biographies can be found in the appropriately named sections, but the bulk of the site is found in Details on Pirates and on the lively discussion boards. I found the articles on software piracy interesting (look for them in the Details section under Modern Piracy) , but was disappointed that Pirates Fun wasn’t."

People of the Century: Humanitarians and Heroes
"Lifting our spirits amid trials and tribulations, some unlikely heroes rose to new heights. If ever a century needed heroes, it was this one. The Sacramento Bee honors Mother Theresa, Billy Graham, Rosa Parks, Mohandas Gandhi, Helen Keller and Martin Luther King, Jr. as Heroes of the Century. In addition to short bios on the winners, you’ll also find bios on fourteen additional candidates (such as The Dalai Lama and Princess Diana) and a heroes timeline showing this century’s most heroic events."

People’s Century
""As the twentieth century rushes toward its conclusion, People’s Century looks back at the story of our times. This twenty-six part television series, broadcast on PBS, offers new insight into the turbulent events of these hundred years through the revealing personal testimony of the people who were there." Best clicks are the eyewitness interviews (both written and audio) found on each episode page and the clickable time line."
