How Stuff Works: Who Came Up with Mother’s Day and Why?
"I’d always thought Mother’s Day was an American creation, but historians point to Greek andRoman spring festivals that honored mother goddesses as the true origins of our moderncelebration. In more recent history, Anna Jarvis started campaigning in 1907 to formalizeMother’s Day, and achieved success in 1914 when President Wilson declared the second Sundayin May to be Mother’s Day. But Jarvis eventually became bitter about the holiday. Learn more atHow Stuff Works."

Homemade Halloween Makeup
"How is Halloween face makeup better than a mask? Let me count the ways. Makeup is saferbecause masks block vision. Makeup is more comfortable, because masks itch and scratch. Makeup is more original, because you won’t see another you anywhere. And makeup is more funbecause you can make it yourself with these three recipes for blood, bruises and paintable facecolors. To ease the time crunch on Halloween, the blood and face makeup can be made aheadand stored in the refrigerator."

Holidays on the Net
"Beyond its multimedia features on Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, Holidays on the Net also covers the month-long Moslem holiday Ramadan which began on November 27. ""Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It is during this month that Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan. Lasting for the entire month, Muslims fast during the daylight hours and in the evening eat small meals and visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation. A time to strengthen family and community ties."""

History of Labor Day
"The first Labor Day holiday, created by the Central Labor Union of New York, was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. The Central Labor Union urged labor organizations in other cities to follow their example of a "workingmen’s holiday". The idea spread. The first municipal ordinances were passed during 1885 and 1886. The first state bill to become law was passed by Oregon on February 2l, l887."

Historic ValleyForge
"Valley Forge was the site of the six-month encampment of the newly formedContinental Army under the command of General George Washington. Though nobattle was fought there, the troops struggled and emerged victorious against theelements and low morale. This web site tells the story of Valley Forge anddisplays selected items from the museum. Elementary ages should visit "Kids’Page" for games and puzzles. High school students will enjoy "UnsolvedMystery of Graves and Ghosts." I liked the story of Martha Washingtonfound under "Who Served Here"."

Haywire Veterans Day
"Armistice Day was created in 1926 in recognition of the celebrated ending of World War I on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This page tells the origins of Veterans Day, and is part of a larger site dedicated to the American flag and the history of America’s freedoms. Other sections worth exploring are U.S. Documents (visit for history of the Pledge of Allegiance) and History (where you’ll learn oodles about the American Flag.)"

Haymarket Martyrs
"The story of the Haymarket Martyrs begins at a convention of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions in 1884. The Federation called for a two-year effort to win the eight-hour workday, instead of the ten- to twelve-hour days that were common. After May 1 of 1886, all workers not yet on an eight-hour schedule, were to cease work in a nation-wide strike until their employer met the demand. I’ll let you read the rest of the story yourself."
