American Experience Online: Bataan Rescue
Reviewed by Johanna Tschebull, a reader from Boston, who is affiliated with the site. "In late 1941, American and Filipino soldiers who lost the desperate battle to defend the Bataan peninsula were forced to march through the jungle to Japanese prison camps. Three years later, only 500 men in the Cabanatuan camp had survived the brutality of their captors and epidemics of tropical diseases. Fearing the Japanese would murder the remaining prisoners before they could be liberated, the U.S. sent an elite Ranger battalion on a secret mission to save them."

America’s Freedom Documents
"In July of 1776, bells rang out over Philadelphia signaling the approval of Declaration ofIndependence by the Continental Congress. Two hundred and twenty-five years later you can view the original document on your computer. Also available is the Constitution (original copy and complete text) and the Bill of Rights (complete text only). More fantastic clicks are the six mini-movies (created in Flash) on topics that include The Real Face of George Washington and Paul Revere, Messenger of the Revolution. Look for the small link titled Movies at the bottom of any page."

A Moment in Time
"When does the millennium officially begin? One would think this would be a relatively easy question to answer. In reality, however, this is a widely-debated topic. Some say the new millennium begins on January 1, 2000; others say it begins on January 1, 2001. Still others say the new millennium has already passed. This site offers the best explanation I’ve seen yet of why mathematicians, conventional wisdom, and religious scholars offer us three different answers to the millennium question."

1492: An Ongoing Voyage
"This Library of Congress exhibit explores the mix of Western societies that existed before the arrival of the Europeans, and the "first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600." The quality of this site makes it an excellent resource for high-school and college students. It can be navigated sequentially, or use the Outline to jump directly to any subject (such as the Christopher Columbus page.)"

13 Pumpkin Avenue Costumes
"13 Pumpkin Avenue is a good place to jumpstart your creative juices. More than fiftyhomemade costumes are illustrated and described, but many of the ideas need some filling in. Best bets are the wacky costumes such as Grapes in a Bag (cut two holes in the bottom of a cleartrash bag, step into it, and then fill it purple balloons) or Tea Bag (made with white fabric anddried leaves.) There’s also a page of ideas for trick-or-treaters in wheelchairs (drape an orangetrash bag over you and the chair to become a pumpkin) and a recipe for homemade makeup."
