Iditarod
Reviewed April 19, 2001 by Jeanie Olson, a teacher from USA who is affiliated with the site. Iditarod-themed site of activities, projects, and ideas for teachers and students. Iditarod 2001 Website Reviewed March 13, 2001 by Bill Hollis, a teacher from Walpole, New Hampshire who is affiliated with the site. Welcome to Iditarod 2001! The Walpole , New Hampshire - Shageluk, Alaska connection is a most special one. When teacher Joy Hamilton of the Innoko River School in Shageluk and the Walpole Elementary School in Walpole started covering the Iditarod in 1993, the World Wide Web was in its infancy. Joy’s students would send us their stories as they interviewed the mushers on their way to Nome. They would also send us via the Internet exclusive pictures that we would upload daily on the website here in Walpole. People all over the world accessed our page as the "Last Great Race on Earth" passed through their village. This project received international recognition at the ASCD convention in Baltimore, MD in 1997, and again in San Francisco, CA in 1999, when my colleague Nancy Chapkovich and I presented it. So, visit often-when the mushers start coming into Shageluk, Joy’s students will be sending us pictures and articles for our page. Also, there may be a streaming video webcam set up in the village this year-ANOTHER FIRST for the Shageluk-Walpole Connection!Jackie Ronning, Bill Hollis Walpole Elementary School -->

History for Kids: Ancient Rome
"Roman history is usually divided into three main periods: before the rise of Rome, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. The Empire is usually divided up according to who was emperor. Run by an associate history professor at Portland State University, this well-organized site is a boon to students looking for specific information such as what the Romans wore and ate, or the history of Roman pottery. Of course, there is also general Roman history, a time line, and sections on ancient Greece and Egypt."

Gift of the Gab
""Blarney is celebrated the world over for a stone on the parapet that is said to endow whoever kisses it with the eternal gift of eloquence - the ’Gift of the Gab’." This wonderfully simple page explains the origin of the myth, and explores the castle of Blarney. A small link at the bottom of the page will lead you to Irish proverbs that exemplify the "Gift of the Gab." Be sure to find it. When you reach the last of the proverbs, you’ll be transported to Ireland’s Eye, with its excellent history and heritage sections."
