Internet Chess Club
"Although it is not free, the Internet Chess Club is the premier place to play real-time interactive chess online. What makes them so good? In their own words: ""We’ve been around longer, have more features, more tournaments, more learning opportunities, more computerized opponents, more anti-cheating features, more titled players, more customer service, and more fun than anywhere else."" They offer one-week free trial and after that the cost for students is $24.50 per year. My son was a member for years, and (don’t tell) but I’ll be renewing his lapsed membership as a holiday gift this season."

Headbone Zone
"Headbone has separate moderated chat rooms for Kids and Teens, as well as a combination chat room/word game called Sometimes Y. As with FreeZone, unregistered users have limited ability to join in the fun. Once registered, not only can you join in the chats, but you can also sign up for a free email account. This kid-safe email account allows parents to control incoming mail. You can choose to allow all incoming mail, only mail from certain (family and friends) email addresses, or to block email from specific addresses. Pretty slick, huh? Other recommended features are the educational games — which I’ve written about many times before."

Hangman
"This is an addictive implementation of the classic word guessing game. The computer conjures up a word, only letting you know how long it is. As you guess letters that are not in the mystery word, your stick figure walks up to the gallows. Game’s over after five misses, but a new game is just a mouse click away. "

Halloween with Boowa and Kwala
"Owwww, it’s scary, wary! I love this site; its bright colors just draw me in. Designed for the under-ten crowd, it’s my pick of the day for anyone with an ""inner child."" Click around to discover the treasures. I won’t ruin it by telling you where they are, but they include a jigsaw puzzle, scissor crafts, and a pair of find-the-differences pictures. Boowa and Kwala have other holiday specials (including Christmas, New Year’s and Valentines Day) listed on the Events Index."
