Online NewsHour: ELVIS
"In 1997, on the twentieth anniversary of Elvis’ death, PBS’ NewsHour radio show did a two-part Elvis tribute. This site has the those shows in RealPlayer format, along with an illustrated transcript. I highly recommend listening to the audio, because the transcript alone is a bit hard to follow. Because of his gyrating hips, censorship ""became a roadblock in Elvis’ TV career."" As you learn about how the television censors reacted to Elvis in the fifties, think about the kind of musical performances you see on TV today."

NIEHS Sing Along Music and MIDIs
"Music! It’s really good for you. Scientists at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences study the impact of our environment on our health. Even sounds in our environment can have an effect, so scientists have studied the effects of music on our physical and mental functions for many years. For example, it has been determined that music in our environment plays an important role in stress reduction! Hmmm, and that is supposed to explain why the NIEHS spends our money on a sing along site? Politics aside, the site has a nice collection that includes patriotic songs not found elsewhere."

National Archives: When Nixon Met Presley
"Elvis Presley met President Richard M. Nixon in the Oval Office in December 1970. A photograph of that meeting is one of the most famous in the holdings of the National Archives. Through the original letters and memorandums written by Presley and the White House staff, this exhibit tells the behind-the-scenes story of how the meeting was arranged. This is a great story, and the National Archives does a great job telling it. The only thing missing is a picture of the badge that Nixon’s staff gave Elvis. What badge? You’ll have to visit the exhibit to find out."

Music Magic: Online Piano Tutor
""Use this as a starting point, but by no means use this as your sole source of learning music, especially if you’re serious about it. There are certain restrictions, such as posture, dynamics and general musical style that cannot be overcome with teaching music through the computer." Warnings aside, these fifteen lessons will take you through elementary music theory and introductory sight reading. Music Magic is a fabulous site (it includes interactive games and a huge music dictionary) created by three high-school students for the 1998 ThinkQuest competition."

Musical Dice Game
"In February 1787, measures and instructions for a musical composition dice game were published. Some experts say the game was created by Mozart, but others are not so sure. This site is an implementation of that game, where you create a minuet by pasting together randomly chosen pre-written measures of music. Sixteen random dice rolls determine which of 176 possible minuet measures are played and in what sequence. The resulting composition can be heard in the browser, or displayed in PDF format for printing."
