Get the Picture: Thinking about Photographs
Reviewed February 9, 2000 by Scott Sayre, a teacher from USA who is affiliated with the site. Get the Picture: Thinking About Photographs is an Internet-based resource for middle and high school teachers and students of photography containing more than 50 photographs from the permanent collection of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Get the Picture can be used to teach about both the process of making pictures and the resulting works of art. Students gain insight into their own photographs and opinions about photography as they learn about the documentary work of Berenice Abbott, Jerome Liebling and Carl Robert Pope Jr.; the photojournalist Gilles Peress; Pictorial photographer Alfred Stieglitz; Surrealist Czech photographer Eva Fuka, and Minnesota photographer Stephanie Torbert. Students can also build their own photo exhibits, send postcards representing pictures from the site and learn about the technical aspects of this art form through demonstrations and diagrams.

Fridge Gallery
"Each week, the IBM web team selects pictures for inclusion in their galleryfrom artists under twelve, claiming anyone over twelve isn’t hip enough. Theyprefer paper submissions. If you crave art of a particular color (avocadogreen?), you can satisfy your desires here with Query by Content (QBIC), a newIBM technology. QBIC will search the Fridge Gallery for artwork containing aspecified color or texture. As the size of image databases grow (think of allthe artwork on the Web), one can appreciate QBIC’s usefulness."

FIeld and Forest
Reviewed August 23, 2000 by Kathy McDaniels, a reader from Orlando, Florida who is not affiliated with the site. This is the most beautifully designed website I think I’ve seen. Anyone with an interest in photography and/or nature would enjoy surfing around on this one. It contains calendar pages with award-winning photos that can be printed out and has a photography contest you can enter. The photos can be used as your wallpaper. There is a portion of the site which interviews folks who make nature related items, such as mobiles, birdhouses, etc. which even contains videos of them explaining their craft.

Exposure: A Beginners Guide to Photography
"In order for an image to be captured on film, it must be exposed to light. Yet too much or too little light can ruin a photograph. Light is measured and controlled by its brightness (F-stops) and its duration (shutter speed). Start with the Explanation of Exposure Theory, then experiment with the Sim Cam. Change the F-stops and shutter speeds on the simulated camera, and view the resulting picture. Notice how you can get the same results with different settings by giving the camera two stops less light through the aperture and two stops more light with a longer shutter speed. Isn’t this great?"

"From your refrigerator door to theirs and back again, Education Index is one of the few gallery sites that will return original work submitted via snail mail. Art thumbnails (from artists up to age eighteen) are displayed alphabetically by first name. If your name is Aaron or Abbey, your picture will get a coveted home page position! Other highlights of the Education Index site are their web site reviews organized by topic and audience (from preschool age to parents and teachers.)"
